Junior Badminton Report 05.01.10

North East Wales Junior Tournament at Flint Pavilion

6 players contested the U11 boys singles. In the semis Andrew Oates (Deeside) beat Tomos Sudder (Mold) 15-5, 15-8 and Drew Jones (Deeside) beat Jamie Noble (Flint) 15-8, 15-4. Oates won the final 15-12, 15-4. Oates and Jones were too strong in the doubles final beating Noble and David McCracken (Flint) 15-7, 15-1. Amy Jukes (Castell Alun) beat Cerys Brackenbury (Buckley) 15-5,15-5 in the girls singles final.

The U13 boys singles had 12 entries. In the quarters Jack Griffiths (Mold) had a tough battle with Connor Clark (Flint), winning 11-15, 15-10, 15-11 and Iwan Pullen gave his best ever performance, just losing to A. Oates 14-16,12-15. In the semis Scott Oates (Deeside) beat Griffiths 15-11, 15-5 and A. Oates played very steadily and varied his game successfully to overcome David Palmer (Mold) 15-13, 15-5. Andrew then upset the rankings to beat Scott in a very tense final 15-13, 15-13. Andrew and Scott then won a close final of the doubles 15-13,14-15, 15-11 against Palmer and Griffiths.

Beth McLellan (Deeside) played too powerfully to beat Bethan Sudder (Mold) 15-6, 15-6 in the girls singles final. Sudder then won the doubles with club-mate Tonicha Font, beating Emma Payton (Flint) and Megan Rowlands (Mold), in a fiercely contested battle, 12-15, 15-11, 15-9.

In the mixed doubles S Oates and McLellan beat Palmer and Payton 21-12.

There was a strong entry of 14 in the U15 boys singles and some play of the highest standard.

In the quarters S. Oates had a fine win over Hugo Williams (Prestatyn) 15-8, 15-9 and Daniel Williams (Prestatyn) beat club-mate Ananth Ranjit 15-8, 15-13. In the semis Daniel Ellis (C.Quay) beat Oates 15-8,15-14 and Elliot Wheeler (Flint) had a very narrow victory over D Williams 13-15, 15-14, 15-9.Wheeler then played particularly well to win the final 13-15, 15-7, 15-8.

In the doubles semis Ellis and Wheeler beat Nathan Barron (Mold) and Stewart Brackenbury (Buckley) 15-3 and in the battle of the twins the Ranjits beat the Williams' 15-13. Ellis and Wheeler won the final 21-10. In the girls singles semis Isabelle Cain (C.Quay) beat McLellan 15-11, 15-8 and Ellen Liddle (Castell Alun) beat Jess Faulkner (Penyfford) 15-11, 15-11. In a close final Cain won 15-12, 15-11. Cain and Liddle won the doubles 15-12, 15-3 against Faulkner and Sophie Wilson. Wheeler won his third trophy, winning the mixed doubles with Cain, beating Ellis and Liddle 15-8.
