NORTH WALES BADMINTON

Junior Badminton Report 16.01.10

We are the Champions!

North East Wales Regional Badminton Association U16 team won a great victory in the Welsh Inter-County Championships in Llanelli.

The team comprised Matthew Vacher (Denbigh), Dan Ellis (CQ), Callum Colquhoun (Mold), Elliot Wheeler (Flint), Ben Hughes (Mold), Danielle Oates (CQ), Eli Clough (Llanferres), Isabelle Cain and Ellen Liddle (CQ) and Sophie Ellis (Mold). Team Manager, Mike Cain, had to juggle the partnerships depending on the opposition strength. The competition was played on a group basis with every team playing each other.

The first match was against Gwent and won 6-3. The losses were in the boys singles where D Ellis was up against Welsh number one M Kinnear (losing 7-21); both the boys doubles were lost (9-21 and 14-21). The girls events and the mixed were won convincingly with Gwent not reaching double figures in any of those games.

Carmarthenshire were beaten 7-2, NEW losing the first boys doubles 17-21 and first mixed even more closely 20-22 and winning the others comfortably.

Next Pembrokeshire were beaten 7-2 with NEW losing the girls first singles (2-21) and girls doubles (20-22) where J Hart (Welsh number one) was just too strong. Again the rest of the team came through fighting.

The final shoot-out was against the other undefeated team – S Glamorgan. It was a thriller with the result decided by the last event.

Vacher (giving three years to R Hemmadi) lost the boys singles 16-21and Oates lost 15-21 to Welsh international E Mahenthiralingam; 2 down. Then second boys doubles, Wheeler and Hughes, beat B Bradbury and R Xiao 21-9 and second girls doubles, Cain and Liddle beat R Davidge and E Richards 21-15; back to 2 all. First boys doubles, Vacher and D Ellis, lost 17-21 and first girls doubles, Oates and Clough, lost to E and J Mahenthiralingam 13-21; S Glam 4-2 up.

NEW won the first and third mixed doubles. Colquhoun and Clough beat Xiao and Richards 21-10 and Wheeler and Cain beat Bradbury and Davidge 21-10. 4 all - and all depended on the second mixed. The match fluctuated with each pair getting a slight lead only to be overtaken. The rallies were skilful, hard and exhausting and in the end D Ellis and Liddle kept their nerve to defeat Evans and J Mahenthiralingam 21-19. Result a 5-4 victory.

It was a brilliant result; all the players contributed to the best of their ability and never gave in.

Report of Junior League Matches played on 9 Jan 2010

This season's pace setters Connah's Quay A had their day wrecked due to their top 3 players being away playing for NEWRBA U16 team in the Welsh Inter-County Championships in Llanelli. The consolation must have been the fact that they won the event. Congratulations !.

This played with havoc with all their teams; their A, B and C teams were all demoted.

Deeside A carried on their good season by winning both their matches in the 1st Division, and due to Connah's Quay's misfortune Mold B managed to sneak into the 1st Division by winning Division 2

Flint B Team

Last season's newcomers Castell Alun carried on their climb up the league winning a reduced 3rd Division due mainly to the weather related non-appearance of the three teams from Llanferres. This gained them promotion to Division 2.

Deeside B Team

Mold C beat Castell Alun B by 1 game to snatch Division 4. Deeside B took Division 5 from Flint B. Flint won two more games than Deeside but lost to them in the deciding match which ended in a 3-3 draw with Deeside winning by the narrow margin of 3 points, getting them into Division 4 for their next matches.

Prestatyn B Team

The Sixth Division was not played due to the non-appearance of three teams.
