North East Wales U15s badminton team achieve first victory of the season in English Shires League
Managers Mike Cain and Alison Oates were delighted with the 14-6 victory over Staffordshire and commented on the all-round gutsy performances of all the players.
The mixed doubles were halved with wins for top pair Matthew Vacher (Denbigh) and Ellen Liddle (Castell Alun) 21-14, 21-7 and 4 th pair Dan Noble (Flint) and Sophie Ellis (Mold) 21-9, 21-16. At 2 nd Elliot Wheeler (Flint) and Isabelle Cain (CQ) played really well but just lost a nail-biting thriller 20-22, 23-25. In the boys singles Vacher won well against a very strong opponent 21-19, 21-16, Dan Ellis (CQ) won at 2 nd 24-22, 21-19, and Noble won at 4 th 21-12, 21-12. All four girls singles were won; Cain won 21-6, 21-10, Liddle 21-15, 21-13, S Ellis 21-16, 24-22, and Sophie Wilson (Prestatyn) 10-21, 21-13, 21-13, fighting back well after losing the first game.
The boys only won one doubles (Vacher and D Ellis 21-12, 21-11) but the girls saved the day winning all four. Cain and Liddle won 21-6, 21-12 and 21-11, 21-16; Wilson and S Ellis won 21-15, 21-19 and 21-16, 21-11.
Great victory for the U13 Welsh team in the annual Celtic Challenge held in Dublin.
Leinster were beaten 10-5, Lothian 9-6 and Ulster 8-7 (with the destination of the trophy depending on the final mixed game). Most of the team were from S Wales; manager Annette O'Neill complimented the team on their achievements and the performance of Emily Gwilt (Powys) and Deeside's Beth McLellan and Scott Oates on their international debuts.
